I’m still Presbyterian (just wanted to throw that out there).
I love love love this song. But I feel like I can’t play it anymore, because I live with a few atheists now, and they might take it the wrong way.
Despite what the music video might show, this song is not about religion. Through a little Wikipedia research (judge not lest ye be judged) I discovered that the song is actually a play on a Southern expression meaning to lose one’s temper. It’s also about unrequited love.
I’ve always interpreted it as being about losing faith in a person or in a relationship.
“I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream
Try, cry, why try
That was just a dream
Just a dream
Just a dream, dream”
