Maggie’s Pick 10.1.2014: “Time Is Running Out” by Muse

October is turning out to be spooky already o.O

Two things. First, lesser, WordPress thinks today is our 2nd anniversary, when in reality I began blogging in September 2012.

Second, I chose this Pick today to express my concern about the two recent deaths of ISU females (articles here and here), about how deaths seem to occur in threes and I’m worried about that, and about how I am selfishly wondering if I knew whoever was found in the UV apartment. I have friends in UV, so until a name is released, I will be wondering.

I first heard this song in 2008, I think, as part of a Twilight-related playlist, and I really connected with it then. Less so now.

Warning: If you are even the least bit squeamish about seeing lingerie and/or saucy dance moves, don’t watch the video, just listen to the song.

I really like the music video for this, but it’s not what I imagined when I first started listening to this song. I imagined creating a music video that involved a kidnapping and close-call rescue. Anyways. Stay safe, everyone.

‘Better safe than sorry'(new poem)

My various thoughts and emotions today have been mixing like oil and water, which is great for “tune-out-the-world, tune-into-my-iPod, get-work-done,” but not so great for writing even halfway-decent poetry. So I’m pulling out an ancient work, something I found in my iPod notes. It’s from October 2, 2010, when I was quite young, only 18.

I’m pretty sure I actually intended it to be a song, but I can’t remember how it goes now, and besides, all of my songs have a 10% chance of becoming poems, and vice versa. The main thing is I wrote it, and I’m sharing it. Enjoy!

Better safe than sorry
By Maggie McGinity

Better safe than sorry,
‘Cause I’ve been sorry too many times before,
And in the end
Every leaves me, no one needs me,
No one’s really my friend

So until you’re truly true
And truly you
And truly real

And the things you say and do
Are the way you truly feel

And until you truly want me,
Need me,
Love me,
Here’s the deal:

You won’t break through these walls,
They won’t crumble
They won’t fall
Until you’re here
And you will stay
And you’re for real.”

Long, conflicting quotes:

“So lock the windows
And bolt the door
‘Cause I’ve got enough problems
Without creating more
I feel like I was born
To devastation and reform
Destroying everything I loved
And the worst part is
I pull my heart out, reconstruct
And in the end it’s nothing but
The shell of what I had when I first started”
-“Devastation and Reform,” by Relient K

“And you, O my soul, where you stand,
Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them,
Till the bridge you will need be form’d, till the ductile anchor hold,
Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul.”
-“A Noiseless, Patient Spider,” by Walt Whitman
