New Poem: “Lines Unspoken” by Maggie McGinity

Hello! I wrote a poem on the first Sunday of Thanksgiving break, and now I’m posting it on the first Sunday of Christmas break. Weeeeeeeee.

I had a bunch of weird dreams that morning, and none of them were fully formed. I feel like this poem is not fully formed either, but I can’t remember anything else I wanted to add to it, so I’m sharing it.

Writing is quite strange now. I can’t hide behind my words, I have to stand for them, I have to embrace them. I’m writing songs and hiding the verses, I’m singing songs in my sleep.

I’m being intentionally cryptic because my outlet is now a way out, but not a route I want to take.

Anyways. The poem. Enjoy!

Lines Unspoken
By Maggie McGinity

I had a dream that you would sing.
I dreamed unrealistic things.
One appeared far too fast,
Too rushed, too rash,
Not built to last.

At first I has happy,
To get it out of the way.
But then I thought to say,
‘This is not how I wanted this today.’

Halfway done both in time and content,
My dream left me less certain, more spent.
I awoke before I could see it through.
Don’t know if I love these stranger dreams of you

Though I do, I do
Love dreaming of you
But daydream details cannot dictate
What happens in my mind of late

This was the barest frame of fantasy
(FYI, very PG)
Would’ve rather dreamed you danced with me
Though eventually would have, if I hadn’t awoken.
My dream left out the lines unspoken.

Unrehearsed, unreversed,
Not yet safe to say uncursed.
Unprepared, unaware,
God knows how I did my hair

I couldn’t see me. I could see you
I didn’t know just what to do
And my brain, not being quite there yet,
Ran from what it wasn’t sure it could get.”

Quotes:

“In our rushing, bulls in china shops, we break our own lives.”
“Sometimes you don’t know when you’re taking the first step through a door until you’re already inside.”
-“One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are” by Ann Voskamp

“Hold fast to dreams,
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird,
That cannot fly.”
-Langston Hughes

“Haven’t you heard?
I’m stuck on a verse,
I’m stuck on a boy who fills me with joy,
I knew I was wrong to jump straight on into
This picture so pretty,
But he is so pretty to me,

And he doesn’t know just how far I would go
Just to kiss him,
He doesn’t know how I pine”
-“Your Song” by Kate Walsh

Maggie’s Pick 11.30.2014: “Sister Christian” by Night Ranger

The last of the alliterations for awhile, I start a new theme tomorrow. Also, tomorrow is December, the last month of 2014. How weird is that? o.O time is flying a bit too quickly for my taste.

“Sister Christian” Sunday, because obviously and perfect for 80s alliteration theme.

Maggie’s Pick 10.19.2014: “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane

I absolutely adore this song, and it feels very much like a Sunday-in-Autumn song. Good for simple things becoming complicated, and for complicated things becoming simple again.

“Oh simple thing where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin”

Maggie’s Pick 10.12.2014: “Look After You” by The Fray

We’re going to keep the Home theme going for a few more days, until the 15th, at which point we are switching gears a bit. Not sure in what direction after the 15th, but I’ll figure it out. The 15th itself is kind of a holiday in Maggieland.

Anyways. This Pick is getting Picked because A. I need a transition to another home song that does not at all at all feel like a Sunday song, so it’s gonna be a Monday song, and B. because of a comment a friend said yesterday.

I was watching a movie with some people last night and afterwards we all talked for a bit. Someone there said that where we were at the time felt a lot more like home than where he actually lives most of the time. Not feeling at home at your actual mailing address is something I myself have been thinking about a lot lately, especially with the Home theme.

I listen to this song a lot when I’m walking around campus, because it’s on a lot of playlists I made on my old iPod Touch that I recently started carrying around again. A lyric towards the end of the song caught my attention and that’s why it’s being Picked.

I think it’s also good to bring forward the idea of “home” not necessarily being a place you rest your head, but possibly a place where you feel a great sense of community, or a place outdoors where you feel very comfortable. It can even be an idea, a person, a song, a book, a movie, an activity. Just wherever/whatever makes you feel most comfortable and most comfortable being yourself.

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for this to turn into a monologue post. Anyways, the lyrics:

“It’s always have and never hold
You’ve begun to feel like home”
