New Poem: “Lines Unspoken” by Maggie McGinity

Hello! I wrote a poem on the first Sunday of Thanksgiving break, and now I’m posting it on the first Sunday of Christmas break. Weeeeeeeee.

I had a bunch of weird dreams that morning, and none of them were fully formed. I feel like this poem is not fully formed either, but I can’t remember anything else I wanted to add to it, so I’m sharing it.

Writing is quite strange now. I can’t hide behind my words, I have to stand for them, I have to embrace them. I’m writing songs and hiding the verses, I’m singing songs in my sleep.

I’m being intentionally cryptic because my outlet is now a way out, but not a route I want to take.

Anyways. The poem. Enjoy!

Lines Unspoken
By Maggie McGinity

I had a dream that you would sing.
I dreamed unrealistic things.
One appeared far too fast,
Too rushed, too rash,
Not built to last.

At first I has happy,
To get it out of the way.
But then I thought to say,
‘This is not how I wanted this today.’

Halfway done both in time and content,
My dream left me less certain, more spent.
I awoke before I could see it through.
Don’t know if I love these stranger dreams of you

Though I do, I do
Love dreaming of you
But daydream details cannot dictate
What happens in my mind of late

This was the barest frame of fantasy
(FYI, very PG)
Would’ve rather dreamed you danced with me
Though eventually would have, if I hadn’t awoken.
My dream left out the lines unspoken.

Unrehearsed, unreversed,
Not yet safe to say uncursed.
Unprepared, unaware,
God knows how I did my hair

I couldn’t see me. I could see you
I didn’t know just what to do
And my brain, not being quite there yet,
Ran from what it wasn’t sure it could get.”

Quotes:

“In our rushing, bulls in china shops, we break our own lives.”
“Sometimes you don’t know when you’re taking the first step through a door until you’re already inside.”

“Hold fast to dreams,
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird,
That cannot fly.”
-Langston Hughes

“Haven’t you heard?
I’m stuck on a verse,
I’m stuck on a boy who fills me with joy,
I knew I was wrong to jump straight on into
This picture so pretty,
But he is so pretty to me,

And he doesn’t know just how far I would go
Just to kiss him,
He doesn’t know how I pine”
-“Your Song” by Kate Walsh

‘Young the Promise’ + ‘Dear World’ + ‘Level’: new poems

I’m taking February back.

I’m going to flood this world with words and music.

I’m going to show every story and every side and every song of love that I have.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have a singing voice right now. I’m sick and my sore throat is preventing my plans for at least the next few days. I wrote a song yesterday, but you won’t get to hear it for awhile, but hopefully within the next few weeks, along with many other original songs and possibly a few covers.

Anyways. I cannot sing, I cannot speak, but I can write.

Young the Promise
By Maggie McGinity

Young blood rushes
Over expectations
Under regulations
Rushing towards what it believes will bring it
Elation

The only way it thinks it knows
Hither and thither it goes
Expecting more than falls, frustrations

Promises and compromises
Rarely wish to cooperate
Or commiserate
But they are two sides of the same plate. Too
Late
Everyone sees how little choice in the choices they
Make.”

Dear World
By Maggie McGinity

We’re not going to give you a clue
Or a cue.
If your point of view
Is ignorance is bliss,
Then darling,
You’re never going to know what you’ve missed.

The trouble with maybe
Is that it can never manufacture
An actual reality.
Questions are crazy
But yes or no
Is so much more info
Than a hazy, dazey, waiting
Maybe

Knowledge is power
Words can blossom and flower
Pain can prick and scandal
Try to keep a handle
How’s as important as why
You make or break your own life
And this tiny, possibly inconsequential moment?
You decide how and when and where it’s spent

Let me put it simply, and in rhyme:
Dear world,
(all and every one of you)
If you’ve been wanting to fall in love with me,
(or anyone else you deem worthy)
Now would be a good time.”

Level
By Maggie McGinity

I can’t imagine a question you could ask
To which I would not say yes
Except maybe for killing someone
I’m don’t think we’re quite on that level yet
But for everything else, it’s a pretty safe bet
I’d say yes.”

Quotes:

“If there’s anything that you want
If there’s anything I can do
Just call on me and I’ll send it along
With love from me to you”
-“From Me to You,” by The Beatles

“Art is the highest form of art.”
